Helping pollinators along America's first "superhighway"

Testing Seed Mixes for Nectar-Producing Wildflowers
Carolyn Beans

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is planting native wildflowers and grasses in hopes of someday converting up to 565 miles of roadside into better pollinator habitat. The goal is to identify which mixes of seed best support pollinators, resist deer browsing, and thrive with minimal maintenance. These areas would not need to be mowed, saving energy and reducing carbon emissions.
